Local REALTORS Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act

This year, REALTORS from the Greater Louisville area will join others from across the country to embark on a year-long commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act to raise awareness for fair housing issues.  REALTORS will focus on three key elements in 2018: acknowledging the organization’s changing role in the fight for fair housing; understanding how we as a nation are constantly improving our commitment to fair housing; and, ways REALTORS strive to lead efforts to address fair housing policy issues.

The Fair Housing Act, first passed in April 1968, protects people from discrimination when they are renting, buying, or securing financing for housing. This Act specifically covers discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status and national origin.  In the decades since its passing, REALTOR members of the Greater Louisville Association of REALTORS® (GLAR) and the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) have diligently advocated for and educated their membership on the Fair Housing Law and the promotion of diverse, inclusive housing practices and homeownership. REALTORS will continue to honor and recognize the significance of this important Act and our duty to uphold it, offering equal, professional service to everyone.

Throughout the year, GLAR will be sharing information and stories on how the Fair Housing Act has strengthened our communities, hosting an “At Home with Diversity” Certification Training Course for its members, and engaging in efforts to raise awareness of the Fair Housing Act.

“Fair housing protects the American dream of homeownership for all citizens, and the Greater Louisville Association of REALTORS® looks forward to commemorating the anniversary and supporting the development of healthy and diverse communities,” said Dave Parks, President of the Greater Louisville Association  of REALTORS®.
